Cebu360 is a concept ride that I am working on to fulfill. The idea is to complete a lap around the length of the coastal road of Cebu Island. I plan to film and take pictures during the ride that will be included in a traveling exhibit that I hope will do it’s part in promoting the benefits of “Bike Touring” in the Philippines. Sandugo Adventure Race: We were actually doing very well in this race, our team was sponsored by Salomon and Nissan and we had all the support that we needed. We were on our bikes going to the first trekking section of the race when the first of a “series of unfortunate events” fell upon us. It began with our race map flying out of our navigator’s pack as we sped downhill on an especially steep road. We also managed to follow a river about ten kilometers off course before deciding to backtrack into the bush to cut a direct path to the nearest checkpoint. Last but not least was the freak storm which produced a crazy flash flood just as we were approaching the finish line. In the end, we were wet, cold, and hammered, but we managed to gain the finish line at around eight in the evening.
Talisay Ride: This was a training ride for an upcoming stage race and I thought it would be a great idea to test my climbing ability on a route that I heard a lot about from roadie friends. Needless to say, hubris got the better of me and quickly found myself on the slopes of one of the heaviest climbs I have ever seen! This, after about fifty kilometers of riding from my house to the base of the climb in Talisay, Batangas, of course now I would say that I’d love to do it again, long after I’ve forgotten the amount of work it took to surmount the climb. As they say, “regret always comes last.”
Freediving Cebu: I was a volunteer for a US-based coastal conservation initiative called Reefcheck and we had just finished a rigorous two-day workshop for divers on how to conduct a coastal reef survey. After the work, we decided to have some fun and went on a boat trip to nearby Olango Island. The currents were nasty and waves were huge but the underwater scenery was worth the trip.
